Day Treatment Program (Intensive Setting)

The Day Treatment Program at One for Autism Academy offers structured, one-on-one facility based educational and behavioral instruction to children ages 2-9. This program operates in two sections the morning from 7:45-11:45 a.m. and the afternoon from 12:45-4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday (optional part-time 3x's a week), year-round and employs techniques of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to address the specific needs of each child, whether in the areas of language, social skills, academics, and functional living skills. The children recieve 5 hours of discrete trial therapy in supervison of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst (BCABA), on master's level.

Early Childhood (4-9 years old)

The Day Treatment Program at One for Autism Academy offers structured, facility based educational and behavioral instruction to children ages 4-10 years old. This is a half day program operating from 7:45-11:45 a.m. and the afternon from 12:45-4:45 p.m., Monday-Friday, year round and employs techniques of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to address the specific needs of each child, whether in the areas of langauge, social skills, academics, and functional living skills. The children recieve 5 hours a week of discrete trial therapy. We provide a very unique environment for children with special needs child; half of the classroom is made up of typical developing children, who are coached to help the special needs child with social skills, a deficit in autistic children. The teachers are highly trained in behavior analysis and employ educational techniques based on their continued staff development with our curriculum specialists.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool

The Creative Curriculum is designed for early childhood programs serving children ages infant to 5 years old. It rests on the foundation of research and responds to new requirements for addressing academic content. It defines more clearly the vital role of the teacher in connecting content, teaching, and learning for preschool children. Left unchanged are two features that distinguish The creative curriculum from other approaches: curriculum framework and focus on interest areas.

What is One for Autism Academy?

One for Autism Academy is a small, innovative, therapeutic educational facility for children 2-10 years old diagnosed with autism or other developmental delays. One for Autism serves students from the San Antonio, surrounding cities, and International area such as Mexico, who are not currently acquiring language, social, and/or life skills in typical or special education classroom environments. One for Autism Academy is appropriate for students who have been successful previously in an intensive applied behavior analysis (ABA) curriculum, students who may benefit from one-to-one behavioral instruction and very small group learning environments, and students entering treatment for the first time. In addition to facility –based programs such as the day treatment program (intensive and transitional) and structured after-school program, One for Autism offers in-home education and treatment options as well through behavioral and workshop consultation services.

How do you teach at One for Autism Academy?

Our instructional program is designed to address the specific needs of each child, whether in the areas of language, social skills, academics or functional living skills. We employ applied behavioral techniques to teach across all skills areas. ABA is one scientifically validated methodology acknowledged by the U.S. Surgeon General to be effective with students with autism (Surgeon General’s Report on Mental health 1999). The academic curriculum is based on the Texas Standards for Public Schools. In affiliation with UTSA and UIW Dr. Cortez and Dr. Huerta provide continued support to our curriculum and staff development throughout the year.

Is every child who applies to One for Autism Academy accepted?

One for Autism receives more applications that it has slots to fill, so not all children who apply are able to enroll. The availability of the staff whose experience matches the child’s needs at the time of a vacancy to be filled is primary factor in admission decisions. One for Autism maintains a waiting list with active applications on file to fill vacancies as they arise.

Does One for Autism accommodate special diets and medication?

One for Autism accommodates medication schedules and special diets with signed consents from the child’s physician. Appropriate forms are available by request.

Is transportation available to or from clinic?

One for Autism does not currently provide transportation. Parent carpools are the usual means of transportation. WE assist families in finding other families for carpool purposes when possible.

What if my child requires care after-school?

The after-school program at One for Autism Academy provides a safe, stimulating environment with excellent opportunities for socialization for the children. This program may include homework assistance, private therapy (OT, speech , music, behavioral) and much more. This program operates from 2:30pm – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, year-round.

How can parents participate at One for Autism Academy?

Parent education and involvement is considered a fundamental part of the program in affiliation with Brighton – The Center for inclusive Communities – These programs are offered at One for Autism:

Precious Minds New Connections is a program for parents and caregivers of children ages 0-4 who are affected by disabilities, developmental delays, or other related special needs or risk factors. Risk factors may include a child in foster care, teen parents, a child with behavioral problems, premature birth and other issues. Participants in the Precious Minds program meet at various locations throughout the Bexar County area on a regular basis and have the opportunity to meet with other parents, share ideas and support, and review a quality parenting curriculum – The Nurturing Program.

The goals of the program are to help parents increase confidence in meeting the needs of their children; to increase their knowledge about child development, especially as it relates to the child or family’s special circumstances; to learn more about community resources; to help prepare children for school & work, with teachers to help meet the needs of their children.

The Parent Alliance for Learning Support (PALS) is an advocacy training and family support program designed to empower parents and professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for children with a disability in order to insure that they are receiving an appropriate public education. PALS offers this advocacy curriculum to parents, professional and volunteers with the primary focus on parents of children protected under the IDEA from birth to age eleven.

Understanding the rights of children protected under the IDEA is the first step in becoming a successful advocate. The “ Building Bridges” curriculum covers the IDEA 2004 reauthorization. Our professional trainers are experienced advocates and are actively involved assisting parents and professionals at ARD meetings or with other information concerning children’s rights.

These are FREE programs which offers come great benefits:

  • A great parent program and opportunity to meet with other parents of young children
  • Child care is provided during the group sessions and the children’s program follows the adult session material. Caregivers are qualified individuals who regularly work with children.
  • Dinner, snacks, and refreshments for families during the group sessions.
  • A parent curriculum that addresses discipline, self-esteem, special needs of children and families, and many other topics.
  • A framed certificate of completion for parents attending most of the sessions.

One for Autism also provides a parent support group every other month, parents are encouraged to attend.

What is the enrollment period at One for Autism Academy?

One for Autism operates year-round, observing many of the holidays as the North Side Independent School District (NISD).

Are you licensed by the state?

One for Autism is licensed childcare provider by the State of Texas.
